Personal finance writer & founder of MyCash Advice
✓ Debt-free since 2019Hi, I’m John — and if you’ve ever stared at a credit card statement and felt your stomach drop, I’ve been there too. Not once. For years.
Back in my late twenties, I was the person who nodded along whenever anyone mentioned budgeting, savings accounts, or investing — while privately having no idea what I was doing. I was earning a decent income, spending almost all of it, and carrying more debt than I want to admit on this page.
The turning point
It hit me during a conversation with my older brother. He was talking about his emergency fund, his retirement contributions, his plan. I had none of those things. I had a Netflix subscription and a credit card balance that had been sitting there for two years, quietly charging me interest every single month.
That week, I started reading everything I could find about personal finance. But most of it was either written for people who already knew the basics — or buried under so many affiliate disclaimers it felt like a sales pitch. I wanted someone to just talk to me like a normal person.
So I built the site I wish had existed when I was figuring this out.
What I did to turn things around
I tracked every dollar. I used the 50/30/20 rule to restructure my spending. I cut two credit cards, automated my savings, and threw every extra dollar at my highest-interest debt first. It wasn’t glamorous — but by mid-2019, I was debt-free for the first time in almost a decade.
That experience changed how I think about money completely. And it made me want to share what I learned with as many people as possible.
Why MyCash Advice exists
I started this site because personal finance doesn’t have to be complicated. It just has to be explained well. Every article I write is built around one question: would a beginner actually understand this?
No jargon. No judgment. No “just stop buying coffee” advice that ignores real life. Just honest, practical guidance for people who want to take control of their money — whether that means building a first budget, getting out of debt, or finally starting to save.
I benchmark everything against the best sites in the industry so you’re getting information that’s genuinely useful — not just content for content’s sake.
What you’ll find here
MyCash Advice covers budgeting, savings, credit cards, debt payoff, and investing — all written for real people, not finance professionals. I also built free tools (like budget calculators) so you can put the advice into action immediately, not just read about it.
If you’re just starting out or trying to reset — you’re in the right place. I wrote every guide on this site with you in mind.
